A man from Leeds has been jailed for 16 months following a dangerous police pursuit that began on the A64 and ended on the A19 near Easingwold.

Kenan Joseph, 23, formerly of Harehills, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop after a collision, failing to provide a specimen for analysis, driving without insurance, and possession of cannabis. He was sentenced at York Crown Court on 23 May.

The incident took place on 25 April 2025, when officers signalled for Joseph to stop while he was travelling on the A64 near Bilborough Top. He failed to comply and instead drove off at high speed.

During the pursuit, Joseph drove at speeds exceeding 100mph, crossed double white lines, and drove on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic. He collided with several vehicles before officers deployed a stinger device to deflate his tyres, bringing the vehicle to a stop on the A19 near Easingwold.

He received 14 months' imprisonment for dangerous driving and a further two months for failing to provide a specimen, to be served consecutively. In addition, Joseph was banned from driving for three years and eight months, ordered to take an extended driving test before regaining his licence, and must pay £1,340 in compensation.

PC Scott Sharlotte of the Specialist Operations Unit said: “On his arrest Joseph was rude and abusive and said he did not care that he put other road users in danger.

“Now that he is in prison, he has time to reflect on that and should think himself lucky that the most serious charge he faced was for dangerous driving and nothing more catastrophic.

“We will not tolerate such driving and will use all of our specialist skills and equipment to deny criminals and dangerous drivers the use of the road.”
