Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) has introduced a new initiative to encourage early reading among families in the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).

Partnering with Harrogate District Hospital's Library and Knowledge Service, the initiative aims to make reading part of the care experience for families with young children.

On SCBU, parents can select from a specially curated collection of books, including stories, rhymes, poetry, and bi-lingual options.

Nurses on the unit assist parents in reading to their babies during skin-to-skin contact.

Every family also receives a BookStart pack supplied by the North Yorkshire Public Library Service to take home.

Research highlights that early exposure to voices and language provides a strong developmental foundation, offering long-term social and educational benefits alongside positive medical outcomes.

Harrogate District Hospital is committed to family-centred care, understanding that maintaining routines like reading can have a significant impact during stressful times.

With dedicated resources and support, families on SCBU can strengthen emotional bonds and develop unique communication methods.

This initiative coincides with the National Year of Reading 2026, a major campaign promoting the joy of reading and the calming influence of books throughout life's challenges.

Breeda Columb, Executive Director of Nursing, Midwifery and AHPs, said: “During the National Year of Reading, we wanted to make sure families on SCBU have every opportunity to experience the joy of reading.

"We understand the impact a parent's voice and storytelling can have on a child’s development, and we're proud to be embedding this into the care we provide every day.”

Hilary O’Callaghan, Knowledge and Library Service Manager, added: “We are delighted to support the wonderful team on SCBU in providing a library for parents and carers which help them connect with their babies and support their own wellbeing.”
