Concerns from villagers in Scotton about two major energy projects have been taken to Parliament by Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Tom Gordon.

Plans for a large solar farm and two Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) sites near the village have sparked fears among locals about safety, traffic, and the loss of farmland.

Residents told the Liberal Democrat MP during his summer tour of the constituency that they worry about the impact of heavy goods vehicles cutting through the village – particularly with children crossing outside the primary school, where there is no pedestrian crossing. Developers have estimated more than 2,000 HGV journeys would be needed during the construction phase.

Speaking in Parliament, Tom Gordon said villagers are not opposed to renewable energy but believe their safety and local infrastructure must come first. He highlighted the risks of routing HGVs down narrow country roads and urged ministers to ensure rural communities are properly considered in the planning process.

The MP has also pushed for stricter safety rules on BESS sites. Earlier this year, he called for fire services to be made statutory consultees on planning applications for battery storage facilities.

Commenting, Tom said:

‘While I recognise the importance of renewable energy in supporting the UK’s net-zero goals and welcome sustainable initiatives, it is crucial that the safety and wellbeing of local communities are not compromised.

‘During my summer tour of the constituency, I spoke with residents from Scotton who raised concerns around traffic, school safety, and the loss of farmland – issues that must be taken seriously.
