A wanted man who drove towards a police officer while trying to escape arrest in Scarborough has been jailed for 14 months.

Harrison Douglas Long, 35, was spotted driving a white van in the town on 28 July after being wanted by another police force.

Police followed him to a courtyard off Somerset Terrace, where an officer told him to stop.

Instead, Long drove towards the officer and his car, only just missing him.

He then tried to get between the police car and another car, damaging both before driving away.

Long was later found as a passenger in another vehicle near Malton and was arrested.

The car he damaged while fleeing was written off, while the police vehicle was also badly damaged and needed extensive repairs.

Long, who has no fixed address and was previously from Selkirk, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

He was sentenced at York Crown Court on Thursday 10 September and banned from driving for two years.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Alfie Thomlinson said: “Long made a significant attempt to get away from a police officer carrying out his lawful duty. The 14-month custodial sentence and two-year driving ban is a welcome outcome.

“Thankfully, the officer involved escaped injury, but it could have ended very differently that day.”
