Egyptian man jailed after raping woman in York alleyway
He's been sentenced to eight years in prison
An Egyptian national has been jailed for eight years after raping a woman in a York city centre alleyway.
21-year-old Eid Anwar Fathi Najjar pleaded guilty to rape and sexual assault after "an overwhelming amount of evidence left him no choice", officers say.
York Crown Court heard how Najjar given a warning by security staff at a York night club in July last year, after he showed sexual and predatory behaviour towards a woman.
When the door-staff were distracted, he led to victim into an alleyway and raped her.
Two members of the public found the victim in a distressed state.
A police investigation was launched, and Najjar was arrested.
In police interviews, he claimed the woman had consented.
“Najjar is a sexual predator and a danger to women and is now rightly behind bars", Detective Superintendent Fionna McEwan, said.
She thanked the victim for her bravery, the members of public who took care of her, and the door-staff who provided evidence.
She continued, “Rape and sexual assault have far-reaching and long-lasting effects on survivors and everyone in society must challenge predatory and sexualised behaviour when they see it.
“All women must be able to enjoy a night out without worrying about the entitled behaviour of predatory men.
“I urge anyone If you are a victim of rape or sexual assault, no matter when it happened, please come forward. You will be listened to and all reports will be fully investigated. Even if the incident was a long time ago and it is not possible to convict the offender, you will still be offered all of the support services that are available to victims of abuse.”
