Drug dealer jailed for eight years after high-speed crash injures taxi driver
James Johnson caused serious injuries in collision on A1(M) near Tadcaster
James Johnson, a 31-year-old from Salford, has been sentenced to eight years in prison following a high-speed crash and drug-related offences on the A1(M).
On 28th August 2026, Johnson attempted to evade police while driving northbound in a white Audi A3, reaching speeds of over 130mph as he dangerously weaved through heavy traffic.
Near the exit of junction 44 onto the A659, his vehicle collided with a taxi, leaving the driver with severe injuries and broken bones.
Following his arrest, police discovered 10kg of cocaine in Johnson's car.
He faced charges of possession with intent to supply, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and driving without a licence or insurance.
Johnson pleaded guilty, and York Crown Court sentenced him to an eight-year prison term on 9th October 2026.
As part of the sentencing, a court order was issued to deprive him of the Audi.
Detective Constable Will Robertson from North Yorkshire Police denounced Johnson's actions, highlighting the impact on community safety and the taxi driver's livelihood.
"Johnson showed a blatant disregard for other drivers... His dangerous driving resulted in serious injuries to a taxi driver, and destroyed his means of earning a living," DC Robertson said.
