A man from Whitby has avoided jail after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a woman in North Yorkshire.

36-year-old David Robert Welham admitted to sexually touching a woman without her consent just before a trial was due to start.

He had previously denied the charge.

Officers say the assault happened in the early hours of the morning on 9th August 2024.

Welham had forced himself on the woman in her own home.

He's been handed a five-year restraining order; placed on the register of sex offenders for 10 years; and given a 10-month custodial sentence suspended for 18 months.

The sentence includes carrying out 200 hours of unpaid work within the next 12 months.
