CrossCountry to expand fleet with eight additional Voyager trains
New trains to boost capacity across major routes in Britain.
CrossCountry has announced plans to expand its long-distance fleet with eight additional Voyager trains, aiming to improve capacity and reliability across major routes in Britain.
The fleet expansion, developed in collaboration with Arriva, the Department for Transport, and Beacon, is set to increase seating and enhance resilience in the CrossCountry network.
The new trains will begin entering service from early 2027, with completion expected by May 2028, adding nearly 60,000 extra seats per week along with previously introduced units.
The expansion promises to alleviate crowding and support the anticipated growth in customer demand across busy routes, including Edinburgh to Glasgow and Manchester to Bournemouth.
Shiona Rolfe, Managing Director of CrossCountry, emphasized the benefits of greater flexibility and capacity, which will support future timetable improvements and reduce passenger congestion.
Rail Minister Lord Hendy noted how once operational, the additional trains will enhance service reliability and contribute to passenger growth, jobs, and housing across Great Britain.
Amanda Furlong, Managing Director of Arriva UK Trains, highlighted the importance of the increased capacity in offering smoother and more sustainable transportation options to customers.
The fleet expansion is complemented by ongoing refurbishment efforts aimed at enhancing customer comfort and onboard facilities.
This comprehensive investment in CrossCountry's fleet is poised to deliver a more reliable railway and an improved travel experience for communities nationwide.
