Askham Bryan College in York is pioneering a new educational initiative by launching the UK's first Teaching Zoo. The college has converted its existing Wildlife and Conservation Park into a zoo managed by students, promising to reshape animal education in the UK.

The Teaching Zoo will allow students to gain valuable practical experience by engaging with the public and managing daily operations under the guidance of industry professionals. This hands-on approach aims to equip students with industry-standard skills in various areas including animal care, zoo management, visitor engagement, and sustainability, while also enhancing public understanding of wildlife conservation.

Lauren Lane, Animal Sciences and Conservation Manager at the college, said, “This is about breaking down the barriers between education and industry. The Teaching Zoo gives our students not only theoretical knowledge but the hands-on experience they need to be future leaders in conservation, animal care, and environmental science.”

John Maxwell, Head of Animal Management, stated, “We hope this student-led model will serve as a blueprint for other institutions and encourage a wider conversation about innovation in further and higher education.”

To experience the Teaching Zoo, members of the public can visit on weekdays between 13th April and 8th May, during the 'Animal Aspirations' project when students will be managing the park.
