Two arrested after fuel containers found in van on A1(M)
Officers also discovered the driver was disqualified until March 2027
Two men have been arrested after officers stopped a van on the A1(M) and discovered dozens of fuel containers suspected of being linked to fuel theft.
At around 11pm on Thursday 1st October, officers were on patrol near Catterick Garrison when they stopped a silver Mercedes Sprinter van.
Roadside checks revealed that the driver was disqualified from driving until March 2027.
A strong smell of fuel was coming from the vehicle, and when officers searched the van, they found around 40 large fuel containers in the rear, along with piping and gloves, North Yorkshire Police said.
Although the containers appeared to be empty, officers said there was still a strong smell of fuel inside the rear of the van.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while disqualified, and both men were arrested on suspicion of going equipped to steal.
Both remain in police custody, where they are being questioned, and the van has been seized as part of the investigation.
North Yorkshire Police said officers are out on mobile patrol around the clock, day and night, across the county.
Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
