LNER warns passengers against travelling and Northern cuts timetable amid heat

Train passengers are suffering major disruption as operators across Yorkshire slash services in response to hot weather.
The industry is preparing for issues caused by extreme temperatures, such as sagging overhead electric wires, buckled rails and lineside fires.
Passengers are advised to travel earlier in the day if possible, and carry a water bottle.
Online journey planners are not showing correct timetables until the day of travel because of short notice cancellations.
LNER says passengers travelling on Tuesday can board an earlier service, adding “we strongly advise that you do not travel across the LNER route” on Wednesday or Thursday.
Northern has introduced a reduced timetable "to keep trains running reliably" - with routes between Bradford, Leeds and Sheffield impacted.
A “heat-dome” settling over western Europe could bring temperatures of up to 40C by Wednesday, with this latest heatwave expected to surpass the record for June set in Hampshire in 1976.
