A cricket club is seeking to expand its facilities and boost income with the installation of padel tennis courts.

Yeadon Cricket Club has applied for planning permission to build playing spaces for the fast-growing racket sport.

Existing cricket nets would be moved to make way for four padel courts under proposals being considered by Leeds City Council.

Improved nets would be installed as part of the scheme, which would also create 22 new parking spaces at the club on High Street.

A design report said the courts would help meet demand for padel facilities in the area.

It said: “They provide a further and diverse use for the land owned by the club which will be available to the wider community.

“The nearest courts are in Rawdon and these courts are fully booked for a fortnight in advance and have been since they came into operation.”

The club was planning to open the padel courts between 6am-10pm, Monday to Saturday, and 8am-9pm on Sundays.

The courts would not impact on the use of cricket facilities for matches and training, the report said.

The new parking facilities would include disabled bays and two electric vehicle charging spaces.

The courts would raise cash to upgrade facilities while attracting new visitors to the club.

The report said: “The attraction of this broader group will both widen the links between the club and the community, and public use of the club house facilities.”

A full planning application for the scheme is out for consultation until February 10.
