Former West Yorkshire Police officer and partner sentenced for lying about speeding ticket
They been fined and told to do unpaid work
A West Yorkshire Police officer and her partner have been handed fines and suspended sentences after admitting to perverting the course of justice.
29 year old former PC Abigail Byrne was caught speeding in Huddersfield in 2025 - but then claimed her significant other, 28 year old Sharndelle Firth, was behind the wheel.
Firth then accepted the points and a speed awareness course on her behalf.
Text messages from their phones were later used to prove that the two had colluded to lie about the speeding offence.
Ex-PC Byrne quit the force in April, with both being sentenced tod at Sheffield Crown Court
The 29 year old, of Clipstone Avenue in Barnsley, received a 14-month suspended sentence, 300 hours unpaid work, and £800 costs.
28 year old Sharndelle Firth, of the same address, was given an 8-month suspended sentence, 200 hours unpaid work, and £800 costs.
Detective Chief Superintendent Tanya Wilkins, Head of West Yorkshire Police’s Professional Standards Directorate, said:
“We and the public expect all our officers and staff to act with honesty and integrity both on and off duty, and former PC Byrne has breached those standards by trying to evade speeding sanctions.
“This sentencing should reassure the public that those who fall short of these standards will be brought to justice just like anyone else.”
