A former West Yorkshire Police officer has admitted to lying about a speeding offence in an attempt to avoid points on her licence.

29 year old PC Abigail Byrne, who was formerly based in Kirklees, admitted a charge of perverting the course of justice at Sheffield Crown Court earlier today.

The allegations stemmed from incidents on and January 29 and 31 2025, when PC Byrne was caught speeding on the A629 Wakefield Road in Huddersfield en route to work.

PC Byrne’s partner accepted a speed awareness course and penalty points on her behalf.

West Yorkshire Police referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for an independent investigation - with Byrne ultimately admitting to lying.

She was suspended in September 2025 and subsequently resigned in April 2026.

Detective Chief Superintendent Tanya Wilkins, Head of West Yorkshire Police’s Professional Standards Directorate, said:

“The public quite rightly expect all of our officers and staff to act with honesty and integrity both on and off duty, and PC Byrne has clearly breached those standards by trying to evade speeding sanctions."

"It’s vital that we uphold the highest standards and our officers and staff lead by example. Those who fall short will be brought to justice just like anyone else.

"PC Byrne will now face a gross misconduct hearing in due course.”

She'll be sentenced in July.
