A former member of West Yorkshire Police staff has been handed a suspended sentence after admitting to perverting the course of justice over a speeding ticket.

43 year old Kasey Howarth, who was formerly based in the force's Operational Support department, falsely claimed to be behind the wheel of a speeding Ford Transit van.

At the time one of her responsibilities was processing speeding tickets.

The van was actually being driven by another person.

Howarth admitted to the charge at Leeds Crown Court and was handed a nine month suspended prison term.

Her co-accused, James Burrow, was given a six month suspended term.

Both will pay costs and have to complete 200 hours of community work.

Detective Chief Superintendent Tanya Wilkins, head of West Yorkshire Police’s Professional Standards Directorate, said:

“The public quite rightly expect all of our officers and staff to act with honesty and integrity both on and off duty, and Ms Howarth has clearly breached those standards here.

“She will now face disciplinary proceedings to consider whether she will be barred from gaining further employment in policing.”
