Winter safety warning comes from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue
As winter weather brings icy conditions to West Yorkshire, the Fire and Rescue Service urges residents to remain vigilant and prioritise safety.
Assistant District Commander Chris Bell spoke out about key risks associated with the cold season and provided crucial safety tips for residents.
Recent cold spells have raised concerns about the dangers of frozen water.
Bell reminded the public to keep away from ice-covered ponds and lakes, especially with children and pets. "If your pet goes onto the ice, do not attempt to rescue them," he cautioned, emphasizing that falling into icy water can result in cold water shock and hypothermia.
Should anyone find themselves in an emergency situation near water, they should call 999 and request fire rescue.
Beyond water safety, residents are encouraged to be cautious about using heating devices during the colder months. With an increase in electricity use, there's a heightened risk of fires.
Bell advised keeping mobile heaters at least one meter away from flammable materials and ensuring that electric blankets are well-maintained and free from damage.
Proper smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be installed, especially if using open fires or gas appliances.
"It's important to keep heaters at least one meter away from soft furnishings and oneself, as they can cause a fire quite easily."
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service also offered tips for staying safe outdoors.
With the threat of black ice, individuals are urged to wear appropriate footwear and stick to well-trodden paths.
"We just encourage everyone not to venture out onto the ice. Don't let your children go onto the ice. And if pets go onto the ice, don't go out there to try and rescue them either."
Those who may feel unsteady or have mobility issues should consider having someone assist them with outdoor trips during icy conditions.
"If you do see someone in the water, remember to call 999. Please don't go in the water after anybody."
Finally , Bell emphasized the importance of community awareness and shared responsibilities for safety.
Understanding the risks associated with winter weather can help prevent accidents and ensure that everyone enjoys the season safely.
