Around 80 Labour MPs have now called on the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to resign, including several representing parts of West Yorkshire.

The cabinet, including Leeds West's Rachel Reeves and Pontefract's Yvette Cooper, has stayed united around the PM - for now - following a disastrous showing for Labour in the local elections last week.

The party lost control of local councils across West Yorkshire, with Reform UK winning a majority in Wakefield and Calderdale.

Leeds East's Richard Burgon, known to be a critic of Starmer within the party, wrote in a social media post: "Keir must go. But we only get one chance to get this right. So he should set a timetable to stand aside, with a new leader in place by the ends of the year."

"This would allow for a proper democratic leadership contest with a full range of candidates and a serious debate about how Labour changes course, the policies needed to rebuild support and how we stop Nigel Farage getting the keys to Downing Street."

Imran Hussain, of Bradford East, says last week was Starmer's "last election", writing online:

"Keir Starmer has fought his last election as Labour leader. Labour now needs an orderly transition, a genuine reset and a return to real Labour values — not attempts to out-Reform Reform."

John Trickett, of Normanton and Hemsworth, is also calling for the resignation of Sir Keir.
