A West Yorkshire man jailed for grooming a child has had his sentence lengthened by the Court of Appeal.

54 year old Yusuf Kayat, originally from Batley, will now serve an extra four years on top of his 20 year prison term with the original sentence being ruled too lenient.

He targeted his victim between the years of 1989 and 1992, starting when she was just 10 years old and at primary school.

He bought her gifts, as well as cigarettes, alcohol and cannabis.

After gaining her trust he abused the victim at various locations including in his car.

As the abuse continued he forced the victim to perform sex acts on his friends in a derelict building.

He was found guilty of 17 offences at Leeds Crown Court earlier this year but his sentence was then referred to the Court of Appeal, which ruled today.

The Solicitor General Lucy Rigby KC MP said:

"Yusuf Kayat’s crimes were abhorrent. His grooming of the victim was highly calculated, who was only 10 years old when the abuse first began, before carrying out multiple sexual offences over several years."

"I welcome the court’s decision to increase Kayat’s sentence. Today my thoughts are with Kayat’s victim & her family."
