Former Wakefield village social club to be converted into adult day centre

Wakefield Council planning officers approved the application to change the use of the Upton United Service Working Men’s Club building.
Documents submitted to the local authority said the club shut down in October last year due to “a decline in patronage leading to it becoming financially unviable.”
The building on High Street was then put up for sale “but attracted no interest” until it was bought at auction in February this year.
Plans lodged on behalf of applicant Together Livin said: “The proposed day centre would provide a safe, engaging and supportive environment for adults with learning disabilities to connect, develop skills and enjoy meaningful activities.
“The day centre would provide a wide range of structured and flexible activities tailored to individual interests and support needs.”
The scheme involves carrying out minor alterations to the property and the retention of ten car parking spaces.
An officer’s report said the proposal was acceptable despite the loss of the club as there were “other similar facilities nearby that can meet the community’s needs.”
The officer added: “Whilst the proposed change of use would result in the loss of a social club/drinking establishment, it would continue to provide a community facility in the form of an adult day centre.
“The area offers a good range of alternative provision, all of which are within walking distance from the application site.”
