The city’s biggest casino is set to be re-branded by its new owner after permission was sought from the council.

Changes are planned at Victoria Gate Casino after the 24-hour venue was bought by Merkur Casino Entertainment UK.

Planning permission is sought form Leeds City Council for new signage and advertising on the Eastgate building.

A large casino licence for the venue was previously held by VGC Leeds Ltd and transferred to Merkur in July this year.

A design report said: “The current proposals comprise the replacement of the existing Victoria Gate Casino signage with updated Merkur Casino branding associated with the lawful operation of the premises.

“The proposed advertisements have been carefully designed to reflect the new branding whilst remaining proportionate to the scale and architecture of the host building.”

The report said the signage was designed to preserve the character of the site, near Grade I-listed Kirkgate Market and other listed buildings on Vicar Lane.

It said: “In terms of public safety, the advertisements will not obstruct pedestrian movement, interfere with traffic signs or signals, or prejudice the safe operation of the surrounding highway network.

“The proposals are limited to replacement advertisements associated with the lawful use of the premises and do not involve any alterations to the architectural fabric of the building.”

The 50,000 sq ft “super casino” opened in 2017 and offers slot machines, table games and roulette at the site on Eastgate.

It is open 24 hours a day and offers live sport screenings along with gambling activities.

VGC Leeds had its licence suspended last year after the Gambling Commission raised concerns over measures to prevent money laundering.

Last November the regulator said the licence was re-instated after “significant action” was taken to improve procedures at the casino.

Milton Keynes-based Merkur Casino Entertainment UK is part of German parent company Merkur Group.
