More than 70 staff at Yorkshire rail operator TransPennine Express have so far taken part in sign language classes, in a bid to better serve customers with hearing loss.

Conductors and customer service staff have been completing a course in basic British Sign Language (BSL).

Classes include learning how to sign basic phrases like greetings and numbers, as well as specific language around tickets, platform and delats.

One in three UK adults live with some form of hearing loss, according to the Royal National Institute for Deaf People.

Andrew McClements, Customer Experience and Transformation Director at TransPennine Express, said: “We’re proud of the enthusiasm our colleagues have shown in taking part in this training."

"We’re hoping it will help break down barriers and make rail travel more inclusive for everyone who uses our services.”
