Temporary market building goes up in Huddersfield ahead of opening next week

The new temporary Huddersfield market hits a “big milestone” as work starts on revitalising the town’s historic market hall.
Based on land between the current market hall on Brook Street and the Tesco car park, the temporary market will open its doors on August 13.
Boasting 36 indoor stalls and 30 outdoor stalls, with space for up to 23 additional stalls on Byram Street on busier market days, the temporary market will also feature public and accessible toilets, a market office, and space for other essential facilities.
Speaking on the development, David Shepherd, Executive Director for Place, said: “We know how important it is to maintain a market presence in the town and the temporary market allows us to do this and its location makes sure there is a familiarity for customers and visitors.
“The first phase of the regeneration scheme has been completed and we have been able to create the temporary market with minimal disruption by keeping the main market hall open during the work. Our markets team have been working hard with traders to listen to their needs and accommodate them at the new temporary site.”
Mr Shepherd explained that work would now be focused on Phase Two of the major project as the council begin work on the Grade II* listed market hall.
Mr Shepherd said: “The renovation work will secure the market’s future, protect its heritage and build on the existing offer for customers.”
Hoarding will now be installed around the full perimeter of the Grade II* listed Market Hall and site compound to safely separate construction works from the public and the temporary market.
The main hall works will see essential repairs and restoration of the market’s decorative cast-iron frame and roof, bringing back its original colour scheme of traditional reds, pinks, and creams.
Improvements will also be made to the hall to enhance accessibility, including ramps, automatic doors, accessible toilets, and a new Changing Places facility. The indoor space will also be levelled to make it easier for shoppers to move around.
It is hoped that the new market hall will have over 87 pitches when it is finally completed. This includes 12 larger permanent stalls with built-in services and storage, and more than 75 demountable stalls for market days. The new demountable stalls inside will be around 50% larger than the current ones, giving traders more space and greater flexibility in how they operate.
