Derelict former school in Bradford could become gym and community space

A “PIGEON infested” former Catholic school in Bradford city centre could be converted into a gym and community space if new plans are approved.
The former St Marys Catholic Boys School on East Parade has stood empty for over a decade, with many of its windows now boarded up.
A planning application to bring the building back into use has now been submitted to Bradford Council by Pinnacle Performance Fitness Studio.
The community interest company is currently based in City Exchange on Nelson Street, but the application says it is looking to re-locate to the listed former school.
It would bring seven jobs to the building if the move goes ahead.
The building dates back to the 1870s, and was designed by architect Edward Simpson. It is next to the former St Mary’s church, which was recently used as an events venue, but is currently for sale.
St Mary’s was built as the Roman Catholic Mother Church of Bradford, with much of the construction carried out by the parishioners themselves.
Describing the current state of the Grade II listed former school house, the application says: “The building has been vacant since the mid 2010’s, which has suffered from pigeon infestations and moisture ingress over the years.
“The proposals are to convert the former St Marys Catholic Boys school into a multi-use gymnasium/fitness Centre, education and community meeting space.
“The proposed applicant has a successful business to relocate to the premises from the centre of Bradford.
“They are a Community Interest Company, providing services to the general public and local authority support to specialist groups, encouraging movement and health improvements to all.
“The building will provide two large dedicated studio spaces, which are then able to be used for multiple purposes.
“The proposals will bring employment to the area and bring a degree of community use back to the building which was once a fundamental part of the local community.
“The works will enhance the external appearance of the building which will benefit the existing listed structures.
“The proposals will bring a very prominent building on one of Bradfords busiest roads back into use.
“By granting planning permission this will safe guard the property for future generations to enjoy.
“The applicant is ready to put the conversion works into practice and the planning authority should welcome the investment within the city centre.”
A decision on the application is expected next month.
