Wakefield is to retain its city centre Post Office branch following an MP’s campaign.

Simon Lightwood last month launched a petition calling for services to remain in the city centre after TG Jones, previously WH Smith, announced plans to close its branch at its store in Trinity Walk Shopping Centre.

Mr Lightwood, Labour MP for Wakefield and Rothwell, confirmed that a new branch would be relocating to premises at The Springs and was set open on March 13 this year.

He said: “I’m delighted that, thanks to the efforts of local residents, businesses and partners across the city, we have secured a new long‑term home for these services.

“I’ve also urged the Post Office to work closely with the new branch operator to request that existing staff are given the opportunity to transfer across to the new branch.

“They are hugely valued by residents and businesses alike, and their experience and commitment have been a real asset to the city centre.

“Keeping a Post Office in the city centre ensures vital services remain accessible to all and helps maintain a vibrant, thriving city centre.

“I’m pleased that our collective efforts have delivered a positive outcome for the whole community.”

Jack Hemingway, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and economic growth, said: “This is great news for residents, our businesses and the city centre.

“The Post Office provides vital accessible services and it’s a crucial part of our city centre offer.

“I am very pleased that we’ve now secured a new home and long-term future for Wakefield’s Post Office.”

Thomas Wales, chief executive of Wakefield Business Improvement District said: “This is a really positive outcome for Wakefield.

“From the original campaign onwards, businesses were clear about how important it was to keep Post Office services in the city centre, and it’s reassuring to see those voices listened to.

“Securing a new city centre location provides certainty for businesses, supports day-to-day trading and reinforces confidence in Wakefield as a place to do business.”

In December, TG Jones said it would be closing its branch at the end of February 2026.

A Post Office spokesperson said at the time: “There are a number of alternative Post Offices nearby and we have already started the process of identifying a new operator for Wakefield Post Office in the event that this branch has to close.”
