An offer has been made to buy Pontefract’s former council-run swimming pool building which has been vacant for more than five years.
The facility on Stuart Road shut in 2021 after Wakefield Council built the £22m Aspire@ThePark complex in Pontefract Park.
The authority announced plans to sell the site last year as part of efforts to reduce the size of its property portfolio.
Commercial estate agents Vickers Carnley are marketing the property, requesting offers in excess of £650,000.
According to signs outside the property and information on the company’s website, it is now under offer, which means a seller has accepted a buyer’s offer in principle but the sale is not yet legally binding as contracts have not been exchanged.
A description of the site on the company’s website said the building was in a prominent town centre location but required “substantial refurbishment works.”
It company said: “The property could easily be adapted for a variety of users who require an open plan space with excellent on site car parking.
“Due to its prominent location in the centre of Pontefract, the premises could be redeveloped subject to gaining the necessary planning consents.
“This could include residential conversation, retail, place of education, place of worship, medical/dentistry or training centre to name but a few.”
A Wakefield Council spokesperson said: “The property is sold subject to contract and we’re working closely with the buyers to complete the sale as soon as possible.”
The property was built in 1985 but was shut down, along with pools in Castleford and Knottingley, to be replaced Aspire@ThePark.
The purpose built venue opened in March 2021 and features a 10-lane swimming pool, a gym with views across Pontefract, a climbing wall with interactive games and a 20m studio pool.
