West Yorkshire Police say it's a period when people are most exposed to the risk of falling victim to scams, especially on the internet.

The force’s Economic Crime Unit visited Trinity Walk shopping centre on Tuesday to issue advice to the public on how to keep themselves safe from fake deals.

When speaking to the community at Leeds Shopping Centre, views were split on whether Black Friday has any real benefits at all.

“They advertise it as really good deals but half the time they do the deals anyway if you ask for them”, said one woman.

“It’s definitely overhyped, I’m not attracted to it any more than I am any other time of the year,” said another.

One man even branded the holiday as a ‘con’, commenting:

“I think it’s to get people to go out there and spend money that they haven’t got.”

Despite many people giving today scathing reviews, others believe there are beneficial deals out there.

One man said: “I got] a 55-inch TV for £279 - that would’ve costed a grand ten years ago”

Another told us: “I’m going to get a new PlayStation for the kids, I don’t matter, it’s just the kids that matter.”

Many people, like one Leeds woman, are easily influenced by online advertising, particularly during Black Friday:

“I’ve seen a lot of advertisements all over Tiktok so that’s caught my eye.”

More information is available on West Yorkshire Police’s website on how to keep your money safe this Black Friday.
