Leeds city centre landmark could become padel courts under new plan

A historic railway building will be turned into a sports centre if plans are approved by the city council.

Padel courts and other leisure facilities are planned for the Roundhouse near Armley Gyratory.

Ollo Padel sought permission for the project, which includes nine outdoor courts, a gym, pilates studio and events spaces.

Leeds City Council is expected to approve the conversion of the site, which dates back to the 1840s, at a July 9 plans panel meeting.

A report to the meeting said plans had been revised after a similar scheme proposed in 2023 did not go ahead.

It said: “It is considered that the proposed padel court scheme would provide a sports and leisure facility of positive benefit to the people of Leeds, in accordance with planning policy.”

The Roundhouse is Grade II*-listed and was built in 1847 by the Leeds and Thirsk Railway Company.

It was used as a storage building for Victorian steam locomotives during a boom in the rail industry.

Leeds Civic Trust said it supported the planning application, which would not involve significant external alterations to the building.

Its letter of support said: “The proposed works and use should secure the future of the building for some years and guarantee its maintenance.

“Sports use will help physical health and create jobs.”

Seventy-five parking spaces would be provided as part of the project, along with bike storage and footpath access.

The report said: “The roundhouse building itself would be converted to provide a single padel court, a gym and supporting facilities including reception, changing rooms, café, retail, offices, events space and pilates studio.”

Council officers have recommended the scheme is approved, subject to conditions, when the West Plans Panel meets at the Civic Hall on Thursday.
