Keep the Door Open, Don’t Choose a Knife has been launched by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority as part of its wider strategy to tackle serious violence in the region.

The campaign uses music and storytelling to speak directly to young people about the consequences of carrying a knife, and to encourage them to make positive choices for their future.

The video features Leeds musician Nigel Ngwenya, and focuses on the long-term impact that knife crime can have on young people, their families and their communities.

A spokesperson for the West Yorkshire Combined Authority said the project delivers a clear message that young people’s futures are “literally in their hands”.

The campaign is urging young people to think about the doors that can remain open to them if they choose not to carry a knife - from education and work opportunities to relationships, ambitions and personal safety.

The Combined Authority said the campaign forms part of ongoing work to reduce serious violence, support safer communities and give young people the confidence to make choices that protect their futures.

The video is being used to raise awareness and spark conversations among young people, parents, carers, schools and community groups.

Keep the Door Open, Don’t Choose a Knife is available to watch via the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
