PERI-Peri chicken chain Nandos is planning on opening a branch in Keighley.

A new advertisement application recently submitted to Bradford Council shows that the restaurant chain will be opening in a newly built row of commercial units on East Parade – next to the town’s new Aldi and on the former Alexandra Mills site.

The business will occupy 3,700 square foot of space in the building that sits between the car park of the retail development and East Parade.

Plans show that the restaurant will have seating for 110 diners, including an outdoor seating area.

But the plans do not give any details of when the branch is likely to open or how many people it will employ.

The application details the layout of the new restaurant and the numerous signs and branding that will be fitted to the building.

Plans to develop the former Alexandra Mills site in Keighley date back two decades.

The initial plan was for a shopping centre that would have included major retailers, restaurants and a cinema.

Over the years the plans were downsized before being dropped altogether.

Eventually Aldi announced plans to take on the site and relocate from its current Gresley Road store.

The supermarket chain’s original plan was for a new Aldi to anchor the scheme, which would include another large retail unit, drive thru café and row of smaller shops.

These plans were approved by Bradford Council in 2021.

The development was then altered, with the second large store dropped from the plans.

The Aldi finally opened in February, but the row of shops has stood empty since being built.

Last year another food company, McDonalds, applied for planning permission for a drive thru restaurant on the Gresley Road side of the development.

Bradford Council has yet to make a decision on that planning application.

Nandos, which specialises in Portuguese style chicken, has over 400 branches in the UK, including two in Bradford city centre.

Late last year the company announced that it was accelerating its British restaurant openings as it reported stronger sales and profits for the year.

In November Rob Papps, group chief executive of Nando’s, commented: “The 2025 financial year saw Nando’s continue to deliver a strong sales performance driven by robust consumer demand for our flame-grilled peri-peri chicken supported by our strong brand and customer proposition.”

The Local Democracy Reporting Service has contacted Nandos for a comment, but has yet to receive a response.
