Seventy-six new apartments in Mirfield are one step closer despite objections from the community.

Binks Executive Homes Ltd had applied for outline permission to construct a six-storey building that would house the new properties on a plot of land next to Ledgard Bridge Mill at Back Station Road, Mirfield. With permission being “outline”, further consents need to be in place before the homes can come to fruition.

The development forms the second phase of a larger plan, referred to in application documents as the “Ledgard Bridge regeneration scheme”. The first phase saw the original four-storey mill building converted into 125-apartments over a decade ago.

The latest phase would see 76 two-bed apartments split over over six levels with associated parking, open space, and landscaping. It is intended that all units would be rented out. A single storey building, historically used as a martial arts club, will be demolished to make way for this part of the scheme.

The property will also come with a residents’ gym, office working space, a rooftop terrace with barbeque area, a central “pocket park”, and new soft landscaping areas. A total of 239 parking spaces would also be provided.

But several residents living nearby have not been convinced by the plans, with a total of 33 representations made. One person branded the proposed development a “disgusting and saddening act of company greed” and said there is no care for residents or wildlife.

They added: “What you’re planning on doing is not going to make anybody’s life any easier who live here, I dare say you don’t even care as long as you get a six-storey block of flats built up, taking most of a small car park up as it is, you’re going to put muck and debris all over this small entrance to our homes as well as the car park for near on 12 months if not more.

“You’re going to disrupt night workers’ sleep patterns, you’re going to create nothing but a massive headache for people living here and I seriously doubt you even care.”

A supporting document on behalf of the applicant concludes: “The application seeks planning permission for Phase II residential development comprising 76 no. two bed apartments through the Build to Rent model, on this former industrial site.

“The location of the site on the edge of Mirfield town centre and close to excellent public transport links, provides an excellent opportunity for an accessible and high density development on what is an underused brownfield site, and also a significant windfall opportunity in the context of the council’s five year housing
