A man who rammed a police car in Huddersfield has been jailed
Karam Tofeek caused thousands of pounds worth of damage
A man who rammed a police vehicle and caused over £6k in damage after failing to stop for police, was jailed for driving a vehicle dangerously in Huddersfield.
Karam Tofeek, aged 24, of Leaventhorpe Lane, Bradford, appeared in Leeds crown court yesterday (7th October) and was found guilty of driving a vehicle dangerously and sentenced to one year and nine months in prison. He has also been disqualified from driving for three years and seven months and received a £187 fine.
Tofeek was driving a grey BMW X5 car along Leeds Road, Bradley in Huddersfield on the 23rd July when he was pulled over by officers after they suspected him of having no insurance on the car.
After originally complying with officers and pulling his car to the side of the road, Tofeek then refused to turn off the car’s engine and proceeded to ram into the police car parked in front of him, while two officers were still inside.
After being told numerous times to turn off the engine, Tofeek would not comply and officers were forced to intervene and detain him.
Thankfully, neither of the officers were injured.
Tofeek was charged with driving a vehicle dangerous and was found guilty at Leeds Crown court following a trial on 16th September.
Sergeant Andrew Johnson said:
"Two officers were put in an extremely dangerous situation when the defendant rammed their police vehicle. Thankfully, neither was seriously injured, but this incident highlights the very real risks our officers face every day.
“Our officers continue to show bravery and professionalism when dealing with dangerous and unpredictable situations, while protecting the communities they serve.
"We welcome the sentence, which reflects the seriousness of this reckless behaviour and hope it sends a clear message that putting officers and other road users at risk will not be tolerated.
"Officers from Roads Policing are committed to denying criminals use of the roads and work day and night to keep communities of West Yorkshire safer.”
