Man jailed for six years and eight months over death of elderly man
Thomas Childe pleaded guilty to manslaughter at an earlier hearing
A 24-year-old man from Garforth has been jailed for six years and eight months for the manslaughter of an elderly man.
West Yorkshire Police said Thomas Childe was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on Friday 23rd October.
He had pleaded guilty to manslaughter at an earlier hearing.
What happened
Police said Childe was arrested after an incident on Aberford Road in Garforth on 29th October 2025.
They said he pushed 79-year-old Colin Starbuck to the floor at a bus stop following a verbal argument.
Mr Starbuck was taken to hospital after receiving emergency treatment at the scene.
He was pronounced dead later that day.
The investigation
Police said an investigation into Mr Starbuck's death found he had suffered a heart attack.
Detectives established a causal link between the heart attack and the argument.
Childe was positively identified from CCTV footage.
He was initially charged with murder.
Police response
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Superintendent Matt Holdsworth said: "The thorough investigation conducted by our officers was able to prove that Childe was responsible for causing the needless death of Mr Starbuck, whose family are still coming to terms with their sudden loss."
Detective Superintendent Holdsworth said: "I hope today's outcome will give them some comfort as they try to move forwards with their lives."
