A man has admitted to murdering a woman at her home in Leeds last year.

John Bootland, 57, pleaded guilty at Leeds Crown Court today (January 16) to the murder of 62-year-old Colleen Westerman.

The attack took place on November 6 2025 at an address in Melville Gardens in the Woodhouse area, where police were called following reports of a disturbance during the evening.

Officers arrived at the property to find Ms Westerman had suffered multiple injuries in the attack. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bootland, who also lived on Melville Gardens, will be sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on April 1.

Reacting to the plea, Detective Inspector Tom Hilyer of West Yorkshire Police said:

“We welcome Bootland’s guilty plea today, particularly as it has spared Colleen’s family the ordeal of a trial."

“We now await Bootland’s sentencing and our thoughts remain with family members at what remains a very difficult time."
