A new botanic garden could boost scientific study and create a visitor attraction at the city’s main university.
The University of Leeds is seeking planning permission to create an exotic green space at its Woodhouse Lane campus.
Talks have been held with the city council over the proposal, part of a programme of improvements for the campus.
A design report said: “The scheme seeks to provide a high-quality environment that supports teaching and scientific study while offering accessible green space for students, staff, visitors and the wider public.”
The university said the planned garden was part of its “campus re-imagined” scheme of improvements over the next 15 years.
It is set to include botanical plant collections, a glasshouse, outdoor teaching spaces and walking routes.
The report said: “The Botanic Garden site is located in the southern part of the campus, between the EC Stoner and Food Sciences buildings.
“The proposed layout provides four distinct character zones, providing a diverse garden with year-round interest, as well as specialist habitats devised for teaching and research.”
Exotic plants will be placed a controlled climate in the glasshouse if the project is approved by Leeds City Council.
The report said: “The proposed glasshouse will be sympathetic and subservient to the brutalist architecture surrounding it.
“The glasshouse will be fully wheelchair accessible, with sliding doors which will be open to the public at set times during the day and when not being used for teaching.”
A full planning application is out for consultation until August 5.
