With heating costs continuing to put pressure on household budgets, experts say making small changes at home can lead to significant savings over the colder months.

Greg Potter, Head of Member Engagement at Leeds Credit Union, says this time of year can be particularly difficult financially for many people.

“After the additional costs of Christmas, people are often already stretched at the start of the year,” he said.

“This cold snap just adds to that pressure, and unfortunately some people are having to make really difficult choices between heating, food and other essentials.”

Greg says many households can reduce their energy use without spending large sums of money. One of the easiest steps is draught-proofing.

Using curtains wisely can also make a difference, with thicker curtains drawn at dusk helping to retain heat indoors.

People are also being encouraged to only heat the rooms they use, rather than turning radiators up throughout the whole house.

Setting thermostats carefully can further reduce unnecessary energy use, potentially saving households hundreds of pounds over the winter.

Greg Potter from Leeds Credit Union says many people don’t realise how small adjustments can add up to meaningful savings, especially during prolonged cold spells.

Alongside practical advice, Leeds Credit Union is also supporting members who may be struggling with rising energy costs.

The organisation offers affordable loans and savings products designed to help people manage increased bills and avoid high-interest borrowing.

Residents worried about their heating costs this winter are encouraged to seek advice early and explore the support available to help keep their homes warm and safe during the colder months.
