Construction work on a major project aiming to make it safer and easier for pedestrians and cyclists in Leeds city centre is set to begin in the new year.
The City Links initiative will connect the north and south sections of Leeds city centre with surrounding communities.
Several areas in the 'northern corridor' will benefit from upgrades, including Great George Street, Merrion Street, and Woodhouse Lane. Work will include:
Wider pavements to create extra pedestrian space and opportunities for outdoor cafes
A segregated two-way cycle track for safer cycling
Altered pedestrian and cycle crossings for improved safety
Visual improvements at the Great George Street/Woodhouse Lane junction, creating easier crossings and a more pleasant environment
New greenery and trees
Work in the 'southern corridor' will cover Kirkgate, The Calls, Wharf Street, Call Lane, and surrounding areas, with improvements such as:
Wider pavements offering more room for pedestrians
A segregated two-way cycle track to ensure cyclists have secure routes
Fewer road lanes to make space for safer travel infrastructure
Revamped pedestrian crossings
From January 5, Great George Street will undergo traffic management changes and temporary road closures.
A one-way system will be put in place between Oxford Place and Park Street, with access to Oxford Row maintained.
A temporary road closure on Great George Street, Merrion Street, and Woodhouse Lane junction will start on 26th January and last for 11 weeks.
Construction on Leeds City Links is expected to be completed by early 2027.
