Two former Leeds City Council staff arrested in ‘bribery’ investigation

Two former Leeds City Council staff have been arrested as part of a police investigation into alleged bribery offences.
West Yorkshire Police said both were released under investigation after being arrested on Thursday morning (June 11).
The two men were questioned as part of an ongoing inquiry by the Economic Crime Unit.
Leeds City Council said it was informed of the arrests of two former members of its planning staff.
Nobody currently employed by the council was being investigated as part of the inquiry.
A police spokesperson said: “One of the men had previously been arrested as part of this investigation and was re-arrested on suspicion of further bribery offences, misconduct in a public office and money laundering.
“The other man was also arrested on suspicion of bribery, misconduct in a public office and money laundering.
“Both men, who are former members of staff at Leeds City Council, have been questioned and released under investigation.”
A total of 14 people have now been arrested as part of the investigation, including seven who were not current or former council staff, police said.
Three of those arrested were released without charge and the rest remained under investigation.
A Leeds City Council spokesperson said: “No one currently employed by the council is being investigated as part of the inquiry.
“The public can be assured that we are absolutely committed to ensuring that all our staff adhere to the highest standards of professional and personal conduct.”
