Road closures planned on Lawnswood roundabout for Leeds ring road upgrade

Road closures are planned as the upgrade of a busy roundabout on the city’s main ring road moves to its final phase.
Drivers are being advised to plan ahead as the council’s £13m Lawnswood roundabout scheme in north Leeds nears completion.
Leeds City Council said there would be overnight road closures and diversions between 7pm-6am, Monday to Friday, for up to four weeks from August 3.
A spokesperson said: “The works will move around the junction in phases, with each approach affected in turn, allowing crews to prepare the road surface ahead of final resurfacing.”
Closures of the roundabout were planned during road surfacing between Saturday, September 5, and Monday, September 7.
The council reminded drivers that drainage works were also being carried out underneath Otley road near the junction.
The spokesperson said: “Until Tuesday July 28, the nearside lane is closed on the A660 southbound approach to and exit from the roundabout, as well as on the eastern side of the roundabout.
“These lane closures are in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to allow the works to be completed safely and efficiently, although activity within the carriageway usually takes place during standard working hours between 9.30am and 3.30pm.”
The scheme includes speed restrictions and curbs on waiting and loading around the roundabout.
Traffic signals, along with pedestrian and cycle crossings and a bus lane extension, were also being installed.
Speed limits of 40 and 50mph will be introduced between King Lane and the roundabout.
The council said there were 25 recorded injuries between 2020-2024 at the site, six of them serious.
Peter Carlill, Labour’s executive member for transport, said: “We fully recognise that the upcoming surfacing works will cause disruption for local communities and people travelling through the area.
“We would like to thank everyone for their continued patience while these essential improvements are completed.”
