Keighley man jailed for 12 years over fatal one punch attack

A Keighley man is starting a prison sentence of 12 years and six months, over a one punch attack that led to a man's death.
40 year old Joseph Smith, of Carlby Grove, was convicted in February of the manslaughter of 34 year old Daniel Illingworth.
Daniel was attacked in the doorway of the Albert Hotel on Bridge Street on March 7 2025, with the whole incident being caught on CCTV.
He died in hospital six days after the attack.
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Superintendent Damian Roebuck of West Yorkshire Police, said:
“This case highlights the devastating consequences that one punch can have.
“Daniel’s death was entirely preventable. This has destroyed a whole family.
“Our thoughts remain with Daniel’s family and his loved ones at this difficult time.
“Violence is never the answer, and I hope this case clearly demonstrates that a single impulsive act can cost a life.”
