Investigation underway after a fatal crash in Wakefield overnight

An investigation is getting underway after a fatal crash in Wakefield overnight.

Police say they had reports of a bike failing to stop just after 1am - it collided with street furniture near to the junction of Sycamore Close.

A 30-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

West Yorkshire Police said:

"Police are appealing for witnesses after a fatal road traffic collision in Wakefield.

"At 1.04am (15 May) the Roads Policing Unit reported that a motorbike had failed to stop for them on Barnsley Road.

"Before the pursuit could be authorised the rider of the motorbike was in collision with street furniture near to the junction of Sycamore Close.

"Sadly, the rider of bike a 30-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Due to the circumstances of the collision a mandatory referral has been made to the IOPC, which is standard procedure.

"The road is currently closed whilst enquiries are carried out.

"Officers from the Major Collision Enquiry Team are appealing for witnesses to come forward."
