An arsonist who set a blaze which killed his flatmate in Huddersfield has been jailed for more than 21 years.

43 year old Marcin Kramarski was convicted of manslaughter and arson after he set a blaze inside a wheelie bin at his home on Hillhouse Lane in Fartown in the early hours of February 14 2024.

He has now been sentenced at Leeds Crown Court.

Emergency services were called to the blaze at 2:45am, locating Kramarski alongside 52 year old flatmate Raimondas Vejelis.

Raimondas died from his injuries later that day.

A family who lived upstairs were forced to run for their lives to escape the flames.

DCI Stacey Atkinson of the West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team said: “Marcin Kramarski has today been sentenced for starting a terrible fire which took the life of his flatmate and risked the lives of a young family living upstairs.

“It is thankful they were able to escape otherwise the outcome of what was already a terrible incident could have been even worse.

“Deliberately starting a fire at a residential address is one of the most dangerous and reckless acts anyone can commit, and we are pleased to see Kramarski sentenced for his crime.

“We may never know just what motivated him to start the fire he lit on that night, but his actions resulted in death and serious trauma for those around him.

“He will now have to live with that in prison as he starts a significant sentence.”
