The RSPCA is reiterating warnings about the dangers caused by discarded litter after a goose was rescued from a park in Bradford with a plastic ring, believed to be from the wheel of a buggy, wrapped around its neck.
A member of the public spotted the bird in Wibsey Park last Thursday (10 April) and reported her concerns to the charity. Animal Rescue Officers Aleesha Haddlesey and Hannah Westen went to the scene and were able to successfully catch the goose and remove the ring, before releasing the animal in situ unharmed.
Recent data by the RSPCA shows 2,199 reports about animals affected by litter in England and Wales were made to the charity last year.
“It could have been fatal for the goose and it was fortunate the animal was spotted and caught before the plastic ring could inflict any lasting harm. Litter can have such a detrimental impact on our wildlife which is why it’s so important that people dispose of it responsibly,” said Hannah.
The charity also attended two further litter-related incidents in the North of England last week.
