Police have made two arrests after fires were set on open ground on the autskirts of Heckmondwike yesterday.

Officers were called at around 3:40pm to Walkley Lane, arresting a 17 year old boy and a 30 year old man on suspicion of arson.

A large scene was put in place to allow the first service to put the flames out.

DI Catherine Shackleton of West Yorkshire Police, said: “We are continuing to investigate this arson offence and are appealing for witnesses, and particularly anyone who saw males behaving suspiciously in the fields behind Walkley Lane at just after 3pm last night.

“Given the ongoing hot weather any such fires can obviously present a significant risk to public safety, and necessitated emergency services establishing large scenes for public safety in the area.

“Two suspects remain in custody today and I would ask anyone who has information or footage which could assist us to contact the Kirklees District Investigation Team on 101 or online at https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/livechat

“Information can also be given anonymously to the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 1111.”
