Six men have been jailed for a combined total of almost 70 years for the killing of a Dewsbury man in a park in broad daylight.

Shamus Hussain, 39, died following an attack at Crow Nest Park on July 12 last year.

He was assaulted by a group wielding baseball bats, hockey sticks and knives.

A Leeds Crown Court jury previously found four men guilty of murder and two of manslaughter.

At Leeds Crown Court, Saqlain Ali, 22, received life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years, 56 days for murder.

Basit Ali, 32, and Sakeb Ali Khan, 33, were each sentenced to life with minimum terms of 15 years, 56 days.

Zeeshan Khan, 19, received life imprisonment with a minimum of ten years and 64 days.

Asim Akram, 21, and Faizaan Akram, 19, were sentenced to seven years each for manslaughter.

Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle of West Yorkshire Police said:

Entwistle said: “Last summer, Shamus Hussain was assaulted in a Dewsbury park in broad daylight. The attack was both violent and entirely senseless, leaving him with injuries from which he tragically died.”

“Our thoughts remain with Shamus’ loved ones who had to endure a lengthy trial before seeing his killers’ brought to justice. Nothing can undo the loss they have suffered, but I hope today’s sentences will bring them some comfort.”

“Our investigation team worked tirelessly to piece together the events that led up to Shamus’ death, trawling through hours of CCTV footage and witness accounts.

"Through a careful and comprehensive inquiry, we were able to secure the evidence needed to bring those responsible for Shamus’s death to justice.”
