A man from Huddersfield has been convicted following a large-scale fight at a Derby sporting event last year.

The violence broke out at a Kabbadi tournament in Alvaston on August 20 2023.

Police were called to Elvaston Lane at around 4pm after reports of gunshots and fighting involving machetes and knives, resulting in several injuries.

Kabaddi is a team sport popular in parts of south Asia.

Rajvinder Takhar Singh, 42, of Patterdale Drive, was convicted of violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon at Derby Crown Court during a trial last month.

Also found guilty were:

Boota Singh, 35, of Witham Drive, Derby – violent disorder. He also admitted possession of an offensive weapon at the start of the trial.

Damanjit Singh, 35, of Powell Place, Tipton – violent disorder and possession of a bladed article. Convicted in his absence.

Sentencing will take place on 19th December.

Two other men who stood trial were acquitted, while seven others had already been jailed in 2024 after a previous trial for their involvement in the same violence.

Detective Inspector Chris Barker of Derbyshire Police said: “These men deliberately armed themselves with weapons at this event, which should have been a fun family-friendly sporting tournament.

“However, their actions and the levels of violence demonstrated on this day meant that it instead turned into a huge violent disorder which left multiple people injured and many people fearing for their safety.”

“I am pleased that this second group of offenders have now been brought to justice for the appalling scenes we saw back in August 2023 and I hope they are never repeated in our county or anywhere else."
