Cyclists remember Jo Cox in charity event
More than 80 cyclists will set off on the annual 290-mile ride.
More than 80 cyclists are setting off for the annual 290-mile bike ride to remember murdered MP Jo Cox.
The 11th Jo Cox Way event aims to keep alive the legacy of the Batley and Spen Labour MP – who was killed by a far-right terrorist in June 2016 – by championing the causes she was passionate about.
Organisers of this year’s event have said it is all the more poignant following the 10th anniversary of the tragedy.
Riders aged from 22 to 80-years-old, and from as far away as New Zealand, are setting off from Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, on Wednesday morning and will arrive at Westminster on Sunday.
Mrs Cox’s sister Kim Leadbeater, now the Labour MP for Spen Valley, said: “It’s wonderful that, 10 years on, Jo’s message is still making an impact, not just here in Yorkshire but around the world.
“Perhaps the greatest tribute we can offer Jo is not merely to repeat her words, but to live by them, and show that we really do have far more in common than that which divides us.
“This is exactly what this bike ride does – women and men, young and old, from different places and different backgrounds, spend time together and real friendships grow.”
Ms Leadbeater, who has taken part every year, said: “It’s a tough challenge but a brilliant five days.
“Jo would have loved it.”
Ruby Boyden, 27, has travelled from New Zealand to take part.
She said: “I thought it would be great to join, not only as a lovely way to meet people cycling for a good cause and an excuse to see the English countryside, but as a political choice.
“It’s a reminder to turn toward community not away from it, particularly in times of increasing polarisation and divisive rhetoric.”
Jo Cox Way founder Sarfraz Mian said: “I think the ride is important because it is a reminder that there is all this wonderful stuff that goes on up and down the country, from Cleckheaton to London.
“It is a hugely positive thing that brings together all sorts of people from all walks of life.
“So many people have done it multiple times. And they keep coming back.”
