A council in West Yorkshire is holding an extraordinary meeting today, to discuss proposals to raise council tax between 9.99% and 14.99%.

Bradford council have asked the Government for a one-off increase, with a spokesperson for the council stating their current tax rate was £145 below the national average for metropolitan district councils and was the lowest in West Yorkshire.

Bradford was one of 19 English councils to be granted emergency support from the government last year, but Alison Lowe, the Deputy Mayor for Policing said: "What they're hoping is that the government will say, that we recognise the unique position that Bradford is in as the second lowest precepting authority in the country and one of the biggest local authorities, nationally, of course.

"So, the hope of the council, I assume is that they think the government might say, lets do something different for you here in Bradford."

Meanwhile, residents in Idle, Bradford have been reacting to the potential 14.99% increase. One person told us: "I'm a pensioner we've lost our heating allowance and everything. So, I think it's disgusting."

The meeting will be held today (Wednesday 22 January 2025).
