A village library building could fetch more than £185,000 after being put up for auction by the council.

Calverley Library is being advertised to potential buyers after Leeds City Council said it would be sold by the end of the financial year.

Library services are set to move to nearby Calverley Mechanics Institute under cost-saving plans by the authority.

Pugh Auctions, which is marketing the site, said the building would suit a range of alternative uses.

The firm said on its website: “The property enjoys an attractive location in the heart of Calverley village.

“Calverley is a well-regarded village located between Leeds and Bradford, offering a mix of traditional character and everyday convenience.”

A sale of the building would raise funds for the city council, which must make more than £100m in savings this financial year.

The council previously said it was keen to avoid paying maintenance costs on the library site, built in 1973.

More than £200,000 was being invested in the nearby Mechanics building to make the re-location possible.

A mobile library service would be used while services were being moved between the two sites.

Pugh Auctions said bids for the site would be accepted in January.

It said: “This is a rare opportunity to acquire this well-presented building, constructed as a library, arranged over two storeys and extending to approximately 322 square metres.”
