A vehicle seized and crushed because it was being used to fly-tip in Calderdale will be a visible warning to anyone thinking of dumping rubbish illegally.

It will be placed at key locations around Calderdale as a warning to potential perpetrators.

Calderdale Council Cabinet member Danielle Durrans was updating councillors on the authority’s work to counteract fly-tipping, which she said blights the borough.

The past year has seen Calderdale stepping up efforts to identify fly-tippers and punish them, including heavy fines – fixed penalty notices of £1,000.

Coun Durrans (Lab, Ovenden) said it remained a focus and she told members at a meeting of the full Calderdale Council that one of the more than 20 vehicles seized has been crushed, and filmed by a television news programme to raise awareness of the repercussions offenders face.

She reported: “The crushed vehicle will be placed at key locations across Calderdale to demonstrate our zero-tolerance approach to fly-tipping.”

She said council officers from its partnership intelligence team, who are usually desk based, triaging reports and gathering information, have also been assisting the front-line staff, donning high-vis and collecting waste from hotspots, whilst also identifying any possible leads found in dumped rubbish for enforcement action.
