A man has been sentenced to over 10 years in prison after causing the death of a pedestrian in Bradford by hitting him with his car.

Robert Nagoda, 28, of no fixed address, admitted to multiple offences, including causing death by dangerous driving, taking a vehicle without consent, driving without a licence or insurance, failing to stop at the scene, and failing to report the incident.

The collision occurred on September 27 when Nagoda, driving a Honda Jazz, hit 68-year-old Darrell Dalton as he walked along Little Horton Lane.

Today at Bradford Crown Court Nagoda was sentenced to 10 years and eight months behind bars and was banned from driving for 10 years and four months.

Darrell Dalton was fatally injured during the incident in September

The court heard that he was travelling at speeds estimated between 56mph and 70mph in a 30mph zone at the time.

Mr Dalton’s daughter delivered a Victim Impact Statement in court, describing the pain of losing her father and the impact on the family. She said: “My dad was affectionately known as ‘Grumpy Grandad’... That never applied when he saw my son.

"Only smiles and sharing strawberries cuddled on the sofa watching kids TV together.

"This should never have happened. No licence and driving, it should never have happened. I’m angry is an understatement.

“Not only do I live this pain now, I’ll always have to live it because every time my son comes to me and tells me he misses his grandad. I have to feel not only my loss but my son's loss too.”

Detective Sergeant Steve Suggitt of West Yorkshire Police commented: “The reckless actions of Nagoda that day ruined the lives of Mr Dalton’s whole family."

“This tragic incident shows the serious consequences of dangerous driving.

“Whilst today’s sentence will do nothing to bring Darrell back to his family, I hope the sentence gives them comfort knowing that Nagoda is behind bars.”
